Learning & Science Resource Center::

Learning & Science Resource Center, HIMWATS Savidya Students have been doing rote learning in most of the schools and this is worst in case of Science & other subjects which needs practical learning in addition to theoretical learning. But we believe in the "learning-by-doing" methodology of teaching and our Learning & Science Resource Center is a step towards it.

We have undertaken a Children's Science Training Program from class 1 to 10 children of schools around Champawat in association with Dept. of Physics IIT Kanpur. The program was started with dialogue between Dr H C Verma and Dr H D Bist in Nov 2007.

The first demonstration in Champawat took place on National Science Day February 28, 2008 in the grounds of Goral Chor . The focus is on the schools in the villages around Champawat. The children in these schools almost see nothing in the outside world. Quite often the schools lack even the basic facilities of classroom, light and ventilation. The invitation was also given then to the well-to-do schools; and children from some of these schools also participated

In this program totally different methodology of Science training, as used by Dr Verma and his colleagues around the IIT Kanpur schools, is used to train the student on a particular Science idea by performing few experiments related to that idea. The experiments are fun to watch and children enjoy them as game articles. From the observations, children are asked to derive rules. They come up with possible rules guiding the phenomena. Each such proposal is discussed with great respect and often supplementary experiments are designed and performed to guide them into the right path. The sense of logically derive conclusions from the observations and making observations to confirm or reject ideas are developed.

The first phase of this training program was demonstrated on February 28, 2008 at Champawat. The first session was theoretical but still very interactive. Science experiments were then displayed for two weeks in Kulethi and a group of ~100 students were trained there along with the teachers. The students were divided into groups and each group was trained 4 times a week for 2 hours in a day. We designed/collected about 100 experiments for the training. Most of the apparatus for these experiments are from household items like Wiper, Spoons, forks, balls, bottles, cans etc.

The Second phase of this program will start on later on receiving some grant. In the second phase of the training, students will be divided in groups of 16 and the training will be in Tutorial mode where each instructor will sit with one group. Each group will be trained intensively in 4-5 experiments with different themes and they will be trained to explain these to others. This phase is being conducted in the Govt Primary School Kulethi

A few of the themes are - Air Pressure, Water Pressure, Density, Bernoulli Theorem, Sound, Electromagnetism, Optics, Chemistry, Archimedes principle, Centre of gravity, Newton's Laws, Friction etc. covering all aspects of Science at this level.
